CONCEPT

TRADITIONAL PATTERNS
CONTEMPORARY INTERPRETATION

Bringing authenticity and materiality to a stylish contemporary office space

To create the visual look for the environmental graphics I collaborated closely with set designer Joe Lamberta. I designed a signature three dimensional graphic wall to greet visitors upon entry, and created a textile pattern which was printed on woven fabric and covered walls throughout the office spaces, including the conference area. To enhance the overall vision I also designed several giclee art prints which were hung on office walls and provided direction for their broadcast campaign.

ANALYSIS

RESEARCH

Obseration. Analysis. Exploration.

I drew inspiration from the warm golden brown textural palette of the region and the wonderful handcrafted age-old tradition of African basket weaving.

Intrigued by the elaborate pattern motifs passed down through generations, I researched many pattern lineages and became particularly intrigued by the triangular patterns found among the Zulu for both the historical significance and potential to be revitalized with a contemporary look.

OFFICE WRAP

Transforming age-old patterns with a bold contemporary look

Adapting the woven techniques I studied on the beautiful baskets, I created several triangular geometric patterns for the wall graphics and sweeping glass walls enclosing the conference room.

These reinterpreted pattern motifs allowed the news production center to radiate a hospitable aura of regional authenticity and materiality.

EXPLORATION
How to shape the space?

African fabric designs were a primary inspiration for the rhythmic pattern of lines and shapes I created to be printed on thick damask.

Contrasting with the natural wood branches, clean white walls and organic textured furniture, planes of this beautiful dark orange fabric worked as architectural elements to define the space and create a strong authentic sense of place.

CREATION

ARTWORK

Extending the visual aesthetic to adorn the walls

After designing the entry wall, conference area and patterned fabric, CCTV asked if I would create several additional art prints to provide highlights and focal points in the reception areas.

GICLEE PRINTS

Highlighting the globe with the continent of Africa prominently placed, I continued the established design language of the warm golden texture and triangular geometrics with carefully placed accents.

Bringing the look to the global news desk and motion

After completing the interior design of the CCTV Nairobi office headquarters, we were then asked to prepare designs to extend the aesthetic to their online presence with explorations for motion graphics and network identity.

I created large scale graphics for the newsroom set and surrounding walls in addition to motion graphics elements.
